What is lithium ion battery?

Lithium ion battery (Li-ion battery)is a rechargeable lithium battery that uses the Lithium alloy oxide for anode, graphite for cathode. Lithium battery application originated from pace maker, because of low self discharge rate and smooth discharge, its very suitable to be embedded into human body without frequent changing. in 1992,Sony developed the first commercial lithium ion battery, this brought revolutionary changes to portable electronics, such as the mobile phones, laptops, became smaller and lighter with the new type battery.

How do they work?

The electrons get embedded into the cathode grooves when charging, when discharging, they gets out from cathode and go to anode grooves, a come and back, its a cycle.

Chemical reaction on anode when charging:
LiCoO2==Li(1-x)CoO2+XLi++Xe-(electron)
Reaction on cathode when charging
6C+XLi++Xe- = LixC6
Reaction on cathode when discharging：
LixC6 → xLi+ + xe- + 6C
